Perhaps this is your first encounter with Maatschappelijke Dienst Tijd (MDT). Others may know from young people at school or their association that they have participated in it. But it doesn't matter to us. You are taking part in the 'Life-saving Skills' course by Schok & Pomp in collaboration with the Medicine department of Erasmus University. The MDT participant who is delivering the course is a medical student at Erasmus University in Rotterdam and is also an MDT participant themselve. They believe it's crucial for everyone to learn how to assess life-threatening situations and to learn CPR. If many young people can do that, many more lives can be saved, because the first few minutes are critical. But in ExpeditieRED, we do much more, and you can make a difference just like the medical students.

You are truly needed!
The big question with Maatschappelijke Dienst Tijd is whether you want to make a difference for society. Besides companies and institutions, our society relies heavily on volunteers. Volunteers who are active in associations or other organizations because they:
  • Want to give back for everything that is arranged for them.
  • Want to help others because it might otherwise become too expensive.
  • Simply feel drawn to certain activities and enjoy them.
  • Understand that if you want to engage in sports, someone must organize it or act as a trainer, instructor, guide, or referee to make the activity possible.
We often hear that MDT brings satisfaction and joy because you make yourself useful, meet many new people, do fun things, and have a lot of fun together. MDT also looks good on your CV because it shows that you are involved in society and willing to do something for it. That's why we always ensure you receive a certificate for what you have done.

There is a lot of water in Southwest Netherlands, but not everyone can swim well enough.
Our MDT project 'ExpeditieRED' focuses on water activities in Southwest Netherlands. Every year, children and adults drown in ditches, canals, ponds, and sea. Drowning is therefore a significant cause of death. A large portion of the drowning victims cannot swim or have not maintained their swimming skills well enough to save themselves. Others are unable to do so because, for example, they are injured or panic-stricken. However, swimming is also an enjoyable activity. Many people go on vacation to the seaside or enjoy themselves with a boat or board on the water. Who doesn't head to a lake or swimming pool on a warm weekend?

What tasks can you do?
Therefore, the societal importance of learning and maintaining swimming skills is immense. We need you as, for example:
  • Supervisor for children with their parents. We make children aged 3-5 water-safe with the aid of Fibby.
  • Supervisor for swimming lessons, so the instructor can better guide the participants.
  • Supervisor for adults who want to assess their swimming proficiency (swim check-up).
  • Instructor for ABC diplomas in swimming for members of a water association where swimming lessons are provided.
  • Instructor for Star Plan, teaching children the basics of all water sports (competitive swimming, water polo, lifesaving, and fin swimming). You must also be a member of a swimming association for this role.
  • Instructor for swim improvement for adults (swim check-up), helping adults enhance their skills.
  • Instructor for swimming for refugees and Ukrainians. Many people in these groups cannot swim adequately and are at much higher risk in water-rich Netherlands.
  • Pool supervisor. If you'd like to be a lifeguard during the holidays, this is your chance. With this certification, you can work at any pool.
If you're interested, please continue reading.

There are a few things you need to know to participate:
  • You must be between 12 and 30 years old.
  • You must possess the A diploma to undertake tasks near water.
  • We provide you with approximately 40 hours of training for your role.
  • You will work 40 hours within a club or for ExpeditieRED.
  • Thus, you will commit approximately 80 hours, and you have 6 months to complete them.

If you're interested
ExpeditieRED approaches clubs and schools with the 'Life-saving Skills' course, taught by medical students. This service is free for schools or clubs.

This training concludes with a brief introduction to MDT https://www.doemeemetmdt.nl/ at ExpeditieRED, where we invite you to consider it further. If you're interested, please fill out this registration form. We already have the necessary information from you, which is provided on the completed interest form. The email address you provide on this form will serve as your unique access code.
With this information, our project leader will schedule a meeting with you to explain things further and, if you're willing, discuss participating in MDT. The project leader will work with you to determine what suits you best and what you find most enjoyable.
You'll choose the tasks you want to be trained for and the activities in which you'll be involved, whether at ExpeditieRED or at your club. If you're interested and willing to dedicate 80 hours over six months, then sign up.
If you're already dedicating a few hours per week to teaching or training at your swimming club, you can still participate in MDT, and we'll provide training specifically for you.
We'll document all agreements together with you and arrange when you'll start and what you'll be doing. Then, you'll get started. More details on how this process works can be found on the rest of the page.

The workshop takes place at the club and is intended for young people who are members of the club. During the workshop, we will discuss with you and (someone from) the board about questions such as:
  1. What keeps you connected to the club? Do you enjoy it? Do you come solely for the sport or for other reasons as well?
  2. What does the club do to engage young people?
  3. Why do young people leave your club?
  4. What things could a club do to drive you away?
  5. How does the club's practices align with the previous points?
  6. Suggestions for improvement?
  7. What would you like to do for the club yourself?

The approach may vary from one association to another and depends on what is happening within the association.

This workshop can be requested by you, possibly together with the swimming club you are a member of, through ExpeditieRED. This workshop is free of charge.
